Sometimes a file is not meant for just anyone who gets the link — it is meant for one specific person. A contract, an ID document, private photos, login details for a project. For those, sharing a link is not enough; you want a second lock on it. That is what password protection is for, and ZetaShare makes it simple.
This guide explains how to send password-protected files with ZetaShare and why it adds a useful layer of security on top of an already-encrypted transfer.
Why add a password to a file transfer?
A share link is convenient, but anyone who ends up with that link could open it. If the link is forwarded, pasted into a chat, or seen over someone's shoulder, the file is exposed. A password fixes that: even if someone has the link, they cannot download the file without the secret you set.
- Control who opens it. Only the person you give the password to can download the file.
- Safe to share the link. You can send the link over a less-private channel and share the password separately.
- Peace of mind for sensitive files. Documents, IDs, and private media get an extra barrier.
How password protection works on ZetaShare
ZetaShare already encrypts every transfer with DTLS 1.3 while the file moves between the two browsers, and the file is never stored on a server because the transfer is peer-to-peer. Password protection adds a gate on top of that: the recipient has to enter the correct password before the download will start.
The flow
- You select a file and choose to protect it with a password.
- You set the password.
- You share the link with the recipient.
- When they open the link, they are asked for the password.
- Only with the correct password does the encrypted transfer begin.
Tips for sharing the password safely
- Send the password through a different channel than the link — for example, the link by email and the password by message.
- Use a password that is not easy to guess and that you have not reused elsewhere.
- Avoid posting the link and password together in the same public place.
- Let the recipient know the transfer is direct, so they should open the link while you are online.
